Practical Chakra Balancing Tips & Chakra Tune-Up

“What’s a Chakra” I keep hearing. Similar to emotions, it’s something you can’t see but you can feel. In a nutshell, it’s the subtle energy system that runs along the spine up to the crown of the head. In yoga philosophy, Kundalini sits at the base of the spine. Now you are wondering what the heck is Kundalini, it’s not some sort of noodle but close!

The best way it was described to me was in the book Eastern Body Western Mind. Anodea Judith says, ” … the serpent goddess, Kundalini, represents the evolutionary life force within each person. She awakens her slumber in the earth to dance her way through each chakra reestablishing the bridge between matter and consciousness”.

To speak to the title of Judith’s book, there is something that the East and West can learn from each other. While the East can inspire westerners with spiritual wealth there tends to be quite a bit of material poverty. On the other hand, the West has an abundance of material wealth but they are in spiritual poverty.

When I first started dabbling in learning more about the chakra’s I was so focused on working on my higher (more “spiritual) chakra’s that I forgot about my lower (more earthly and grounded) chakra’s. I’ve learned that the key is to embrace all the chakras at once to have a balance of abundance and spiritual wealth. Easier said than done, I’ll tell you that!

There are 7 major chakras in the body. The first sits at the seat of the spine and the seventh at the crown of the head. The other five fit perfectly in between. Each chakra is a centre of organization that receives, assimilates and expresses life force energy. One of my teachers and good friend, Shawna Turner – founder of Chakra Talk, has an amazing free ebook that goes into a little more detail about each of the chakras.

A lot of the time we think that physical pain in our body is a result of something external. I’ve made it a habit to ask myself what is going on emotionally and if it has anything to do with the physical pain I am feeling. As an example, I got into a fight with a past boyfriend one night, we had our disagreements but this is the worst fight we had. I woke up the next morning and I had the worst pain in my neck. I could hardly move my head. I went to see my chiropractor/massage therapist and she asked me what was going on around the time that this pain started happening. I told her about the fight. As I was talking I came to a realization that I had an imprint from another relationship. I thought every time you got into a fight with a partner they would threaten to break up with you. The fact that the pain was so close to my throat, the location of the 5th chakra, there was a lack of self-expression and speaking from a place of truth. I wasn’t able to express myself properly when I was upset about something in fear of loosing the person I had so much attachment to.

That is just one example. There is a lot more where that came from!

So where do you start? How do you know where the blockages are?

You can start with assessing your body. Are there any physical pains? When you focus on your breathing, do you notice any places of tension? I am very grateful to have a chakra healer that happens to live next door to me. If you happen to be in Toronto, check out my dear friend Marta – Alternative Healer. She also has an awesome quiz on her site to help identify which chakra may be out of balance.

Ok… so getting to the good stuff!

How to balance each of these things we call chakras:

Root Chakra (Chakra 1)
Represents feeling ‘rooted’ or grounded. The basic needs of survival. Fear is the counterforce that can arise when something threatens our survival. It prevents us from feeling secure, focused, and calm.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Connect with the earth, get grounded and walk around barefoot as much as you can
  • Go outside, and breathe in the fresh air for at least 5 minutes
  • Basic at home tasks (ex. making the bed everyday)
  • Set up a savings plan if you’re worried about finances
  • Dance like nobody’s watching (be sure to move your hips!)
  • Eat red foods and add spices to your diet
  • Meditation: Visualize red pouring into the area around your root chakra
  • Use essential oils: Cedar, Clove, Myrrh
  • Crystals to carry around: Bloodstone, Ruby, Garnet, Agate, Smoky Quartz, Hematite

Sacral Chakra (Chakra Two)
Represents creativity, sex and your ability to accept new relationships/situations into your life. The counterforce for this chakra is “guilt”. Guilt undermines the natural flow of emotional and sexual energy through the body and inhibits us from reaching out, diminishing emotional and sexual connections with others.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Be gentle and kind to yourself
  • When breathing be conscious to breathe deep into your stomach
  • Swim in the ocean
  • Have a long bath with bath oil and candles
  • Set up a tradition to celebrate the little achievements in life
  • Eat orange-coloured foods
  • Meditation: Visualise orange pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils:Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang
  • Crystals:Moonstone, Carnelian

Solar Plexus (Chakra Three)
Represents confidence, thoughts and feelings, and our ability to be in control of our lives. The counterforce is shame. What comes along with shame is undermining self-esteem, personal power, spontaneous activity, and joy. Shame collapses the third chakra and turns its radiating energy inward against the self.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Get outside into the sun!
  • Be aware of who you spend time with (make sure they love and appreciate you)
  • Catch yourself if you talk about yourself badly
  • Eat yellow foods and drink camomile tea
  • Meditation: Visualise yellow pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils: Camomile, lemon
  • Crystals: Tiger’s Eye, Amber, Citrine

Heart Chakra (Chakra 4)
Represents our ability to love and be loved. To enjoy what we love. What’s the counterforce of love? Grief. Grief counteracts the heart’s lightness and expansion, and makes it feel heavy and closed. Grief is a result of hurts to the heart.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Schedule in regular time to do something you love, just for you, and commit to it… No excuses!
  • Listen and speak to others with an open heart
  • Every time you look at yourself in the mirror, tell yourself “I love you” (It’s more powerful than cheesy!)
  • Practice the art of forgiving, yourself and others
  • Follow your dreams and desires
  • Eat green foods, such as leafy greens, green apples and avocados; drink green tea and green smoothies/juices
  • Meditation: Visualise green pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils:Rose, Bergamot
  • Crystals:Emerald, Green Jade, Rose Quartz

Throat Chakra (Chakra 5)
Represents our ability to communicate clearly and to speak our truth. The counterforce to truth is lies. Lies twist our relationship to the outside world through distorted information.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Sing wherever and whenever you can- in the shower, in your car, while you’re drying your hair
  • Be open and honest with those around you
  • Say ‘no’ kindly, but firmly
  • Engage in healthy self-talk, coming up with positive affirmations is the first step
  • Meditation: Visualise blue pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils: Lavender, Sage, Neroli
  • Crystals: Turquoise, Aquamarine

Third Eye Chakra (Chakra 6)
Represents our ability to see the big picture, inner knowing, insight and vision. Better known as intuition. Opposite of intuition… illusion! Illusion has a habit of fixating our attention and keeps us from seeing accurately.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Begin to listen more closely in to conversations- are there any hidden messages?
  • Try to feeling the energetic vibration of those around you- are they feeling positive or negative?
  • Praise yourself every time you intuit something and guess it right
  • Keep a journal and write down the first thing that comes into your head
  • Trust your gut feelings and don’t disregard them!
  • Meditation: Visualise indigo pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils: Jasmine, Vetiver, Patchouli, Basil, Rosemary
  • Crystals: Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite

Crown Chakra (Chakra 7)
Represents our ability to connect fully with our spiritual selves. Attachment is the counterforce. The mind and ego can attach itself to certain people and situations. Resisting change and growth. And ultimately unity and connection with your true divine self.

Action plan to balance this chakra:

  • Meditate
  • Be sure to include ‘quiet time’ into your daily routine
  • Give yourself a head massage
  • Eat blueberries, grapes and purple foods
  • Meditation: Visualise violet pouring into this chakra
  • Essential Oils: Frankincense, olibanum
  • Crystals: Amethyst, Alexandrite

We will explore each of the chakras a little deeper in a 7 day retreat on  Mustique Island, Nov 5-12, 2017!
